Landon Donovan is the top scorer on Team USA. During the year he plays for the LA Galaxy, and though he is one of their strongest players his celebrity is overpowered by that of David Beckham. In fact, when Beckham arrived in 2007, Donovan rescinded his captaincy to the British superstar. Donovan was returned to the captain seat in 2009, when Beckham was loaned to AC Milan.
Donovan's career began early in his life; he was signed to Bayer Leverkusen in Germany after playing for the U-17 National Team in 1999. He was with the club for six years, though he spent the majority of them on loan to the San Jose Earthquakes. In 2005 he was signed to the LA Galaxy, his home town team.
From the get go Donovan was an amazing scorer: in his first ever organized game he scored seven goals. Donovan was only six years old. Before being on the U-17 team, Donovan was part of the IMG Soccer Academy, the national team's training program. He never lost that perfect touch he had as a six year old; he is the all-time leader for scoring and assists in US history, and is believed by many to be the greatest player the nation has ever had.
The 28-year-old native Californian is usually a forward, but has also seen play as an attacking midfielder and a wing. He has three years left on his contract with the Galaxy, which allows him to seek out loans during the MLS off season.
